How it works

In practice.

My role is to look with you at what sits underneath the first answers. I listen, summarise, slow things down and ask questions that are not always comfortable.

The aim is not to get rid of doubt or tension, but to build awareness and a bit more self-compassion. What you make of it, and what you decide, stays yours.

Sessions stay close to what is actually happening in your work and life, so it is not just reflection but also movement.

My methodology

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Transactional Analysis.

These are the two main frameworks I trained in, as part of an EMCC-accredited coaching diploma.

Coaching is not a regulated profession in the Netherlands, which means the framework a coach works from is worth asking about.

The start

A working goal, agreed together.

We look at what brings you here and what you would like to be different. The goal gives the sessions direction. It is allowed to change.

Along the way

After the third session, we look back.

We return to the goal from the intake. If it still fits, we carry on. If not, we adjust it. I would rather change course early than keep going with something that has stopped being useful.

REVIEW 12345678 MOST PEOPLE: 5 TO 8 SESSIONS

Most people work with me for five to eight sessions. We decide that as we go rather than up front.

In the sessions

Each session follows the same simple structure.

1

Start with what matters now

We begin with the situation you want to understand or handle differently. A decision, a conversation, something that keeps coming back.

2

Work out what to try

We look at what gets in the way and decide what you want to do differently when the situation comes up.

3

Bring back what happened

What actually happened, whether it went as planned or not, becomes part of the work next time.

After each session

You leave with it in writing.

After each session you receive a short summary of what we looked at and what you want to pay attention to. A conversation fades; a summary can be reread. That makes the step you chose easier to return to, and easier to take.

What we noticedThe situation, the pattern and what seems to matter underneath it.
What to tryA response, an experiment or a question you chose to take into daily life.
Bring backWhat happened, what got in the way and what changed.
